Composition Green Background 1947

Henri Matisse's Composition Fond Vert (1947) captures the artist at his most playful and free, a late-career cut-out where scissors replaced brush and paper became color itself. Organic green forms drift across a warm ivory ground, punctuated by small bursts of accent color that give the whole composition a joyful, decorative rhythm. It is abstract painting reduced to its purest, most inventive essentials - shape, color, and open space working together in balance.

This matisse print brings that same lighthearted energy into a home, working beautifully as abstract wall art above a sofa or reading chair, or as a calm accent in office decor and home decor settings that lean toward wabi sabi or japandi simplicity. Its clean, minimalist arrangement of forms also suits anyone building a modern wallpaper-style gallery wall, and it makes a thoughtful poster gift for admirers of mid-century modern art.
