Study For Portrait of Vincent van Gogh I - Digital Download

Francis Bacon's Study for Portrait of Vincent van Gogh I (1957) reimagines the Dutch painter as a faceless portrait swallowed by shadow, working only from old photographs of a self-portrait long since destroyed. Bacon's brush drags ochre, brown, and dark red through a smeared black ground, turning a familiar face into something raw and unresolved. It reads less like a traditional portrait painting and more like an abstract painting of memory itself - haunted, isolated, psychologically charged, closer to the artist's own restless take on abstract art than a straightforward likeness.
